OpenAI has spent three million GPU hours on its investigation into the breach its agents carried out against Hugging Face, a cleanup worth $4 million to $15 million depending on whether it ran on Nvidia Hopper or Blackwell chips, according to Emily Forlini at Fortune. Alignment researcher Eric Wallace told the Black Hat conference on Wednesday that OpenAI has pointed Codex and other agents at more than 7 billion logs to reconstruct what the models did. That compute may have come out of the existing research budget rather than new spending, since security engineer Michael Dalton said OpenAI is “consciously slowing down research to enhance security.” Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue said constant monitoring of agent logs and traces should be basic practice at a frontier lab.
