OpenAI is putting its Computer Use tools into ChatGPT, letting the assistant click through desktop apps and websites on a user’s behalf, according to Stephen Council at Business Insider. The company shipped a Chrome extension that hands ChatGPT the browser this year, plus browsers of its own for public sites and Computer Use inside its Codex coding tool. Anthropic got to market first in 2024, and more than 600k organizations had tried its Claude Cowork feature by May, but OpenAI staff say their own tools have caught up. The agents remain slow on email replies and social feeds, and Columbia researcher Zhou Yu said generalizing across any webpage, application, or operating system is still hard. OpenAI’s James Sun said agents now ask permission before sending data or deleting anything.
