Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir, and more than 20 other US tech companies signed a letter Friday urging policymakers not to impose premature restrictions on open-weight AI models, warning that such rules would stifle competition or push innovation overseas. Signatories argued that leaning only on closed models carries its own risk, since those can be breached, misused, or fail in ways outsiders never see, and that concentrating capability in a few hands compounds the problem. On distillation, the letter called for targeted legal and commercial frameworks rather than sweeping limits on a technique it says matters to AI development. OpenAI and Anthropic, both valued near $1T and both confidentially filed for IPOs, didn't sign, though Sam Altman posted that he was glad to see it. Huang, Nadella, and Elon Musk all amplified it.
