Microsoft and Meta, two of Anthropic’s largest corporate customers, are cutting their own employees’ use of Claude, according to The Information. Microsoft had expected its internal Claude bill to reach at least $1 billion but has cut that by more than a third by moving staff off Claude Code and onto GitHub Copilot, which mostly defaults to OpenAI models that Microsoft doesn’t pay for. Microsoft confirmed it made OpenAI the default for internal coding while still letting engineers choose Claude. Its total Anthropic bill has held roughly flat, however, because Copilot’s growing subscriber base uses more Claude. At Meta, Claude Code users fell to about 30,000 from 60,000 earlier this year, partly due to layoffs but mostly because staff moved to in-house tools like MetaCode.
