Google has deployed an internal AI tool called Agent Smith that automates coding and other tasks for employees, building on the company's existing agentic coding platform called Antigravity, and can operate asynchronously in the background while employees check in and give it instructions from their phones. The tool became so popular after launching earlier this year that access had to be restricted to manage demand, and it stands out from previous internal coding assistants by being able to plan and execute more of the workflow autonomously while pulling documents from employees' profiles and integrating with Google's internal chat platform. Cofounder Sergey Brin told employees at a recent town hall that AI agents would be a major focus for Google this year, and some Googlers have been told that their adoption of AI tools will be factored into performance reviews.
