Google search users press Judge Rita Lin to keep their antitrust suit alive over its default-search deals with Apple and Android

Google search users urged U.S. District Judge Rita Lin to let their antitrust suit proceed, filing papers Wednesday that answer her July 6 order to show concrete injury or risk dismissal. Plaintiffs argue Google’s deals to be the default search engine on Apple’s Safari and on Android blocked rivals offering more privacy, fewer ads, or payment for users’ searches and data. Users say they suffered two concrete harms, claiming Google monetized their queries, data, time, and attention without paying them while cutting off access to those competing alternatives. Suit dates to April 2022 and echoes the DOJ case that Judge Amit Mehta ruled in 2024, finding Google illegally monopolized search. Google is seeking summary judgment and dismisses the plaintiffs’ injury claims as sheer speculation, with its response to their latest filing due July 20.
