Google’s AI Overviews told users who searched “I’m alone with an African” to lock the door, move somewhere safe, and call emergency services, and returned similar warnings for Indian and Pakistani, according to Futurism, which confirmed a Reddit user’s finding in its own testing. The same query about a Brit produced advice to offer tea and remark on the weather, and other Western nationalities came back harmless. Google said the results “aren’t what they should be” and that it is working on improvements, and that the inconsistent warnings hit more than one group. Google also told Futurism that the term “alone” was what tripped a safety flag. Nationality queries went neutral after Futurism got in touch, though asking about someone from Virginia Beach still returns the warning.
