E-commerce took 17.1% of US retail sales in Q2, against 16.3% in the same quarter last year and 17.0% in Q1, according to the Census Bureau. Seasonally adjusted online sales hit $340.2 billion, a 12.2% gain from a year earlier against 6.7% growth for retail overall, which is why the share keeps creeping up even though stores still take most of the money. A separate study PYMNTS Intelligence ran with Visa Acceptance Solutions puts the typical American shopper at 51 digital shopping days a month, up from 46 in January 2024, counting remote purchases, buy online pickup in store, and digitally assisted shopping inside stores. Shoppers using their phones while inside a store rose from 30% to 42% over the same stretch, and checking whether a store takes a given payment method was up 45%.
