California attorney general Rob Bonta has opened an investigation into OpenAI over the Hugging Face breach, according to Chase DiFeliciantonio at POLITICO. Bonta was one of the officials who cleared OpenAI’s restructuring last year, signing a binding agreement that required security commitments from the company, among them an internal committee that reviews each model’s safety and security. He said his office has been “engaged with this incident since the start” and that he’s watching whether the wider AI industry complies with state consumer protection, antitrust, data security, privacy, and civil rights law. More than a dozen states have joined Alabama’s probe, and a follow-up review that OpenAI cooperated with found the intrusion ran wider than the company first disclosed.
