Automattic CFO Mark Davies and chief legal officer Andy Missan spent part of the 33 hours Matt Mullenweg was on leave signing each other’s severance agreements, with Davies running the company as interim CEO at the time, according to Sarah Perez at TechCrunch. Each package hands the other executive a year of base salary as a lump sum, accelerated equity vesting, his vested options, and a year of health coverage, worth $8.15 million across the two. The terms also make the packages hard to void, defining cause narrowly and requiring written notice within 60 days, a 30-day window to cure the conduct, and a board majority. Mullenweg fired both on his return, leaving Automattic to decide whether to pay or fight.
