Anthropic lost $567 million on an operating basis in the third quarter after earning $974 million in operating profit during the second, according to an amended IPO filing that adds its latest results. Revenue rose about 47% from the prior quarter to nearly $17 billion, but compute and infrastructure costs climbed roughly 77% to $9.86 billion. Anthropic blamed the loss mainly on $5 billion of short-term compute, which it said costs far more than capacity locked in under multiyear contracts, along with a $1.96 billion noncash charge tied to an employee donation-matching program. The filing also says price cuts on new models and customer discounts offset about $600 million of the revenue growth that came from higher usage.
