Anthropic’s IPO filing doesn’t describe advertising as a business model or lay out any plan for an ad-supported tier of Claude, according to Joe Mandese, editor in chief of MediaPost, whose review of the 557-page S-1 found that “advertising” and “marketing” appear almost entirely in reference to Anthropic’s own operations. Anthropic makes its money from metered usage, as businesses and developers pay for the tokens they run through Claude, and from monthly subscriptions sold to individuals and teams. The filing matches the pledge Anthropic made in February to keep Claude free of ads, which leaves brands with no way to buy placement inside Claude, unlike ChatGPT, where OpenAI has been expanding its ad business.
