Anthropic signed its first deal to license content from a news publisher, paying the Associated Press for news and data that Claude used to give AP-attributed updates on election night, according to Adweek. Neither company disclosed the price or length of the deal, struck days before Tuesday’s midterms. Anthropic had resisted licensing while OpenAI signed more than a dozen deals with outlets like News Corp and Axel Springer, and media executives say Anthropic considers its use of publisher content fair use. Many major publishers block Anthropic’s crawlers, which left Claude without credible, up-to-the-minute reporting for news events like an election.
