Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark told officials at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok that an internal Anthropic model forecasts AI could push US GDP to $44 trillion by 2030, up almost 50% from just over $30 trillion today. Clark admitted the number sounds outlandish and said it assumes AI keeps improving, and that growth on that scale would mean entirely new industries had been created. He said AI is already eliminating jobs in call centers and customer service while adding them in scientific research. But Clark also warned policymakers they have only a few years left to set safeguards, and he singled out biology as the field needing the strictest human oversight, since AI has already been used to create new viruses.
