Amazon tests AI-generated main images with gray and lifestyle backgrounds, despite requiring sellers to use white backgrounds

Amazon is testing AI-generated main images in search results that place products in staged lifestyle scenes instead of on white backgrounds, according to a LinkedIn post from Talal Asad, president of Amazon consultancy Brand Together. Asad said Amazon put bath products into AI-made bathroom settings without notifying sellers or asking their consent, even though Amazon requires sellers to use a pure white background for main images. Asad argued the test will hurt rankings for the affected brands because shoppers need to be able to read a product’s label in the main image.
