Amazon proposes changes to Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol so AI shopping agents can handle multi-seller marketplaces

Amazon is helping extend Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol, the open-source standard AI agents use to shop and check out, so it can handle marketplaces where many sellers share one storefront, according to e-commerce analyst Juozas Kaziukėnas. He pointed to two proposals on UCP’s GitHub from Amazon’s Greg Smith, a member of the protocol’s tech council, that would let carts, checkouts, and orders identify which seller or legal entity actually sells each item, not just the storefront brand. UCP was built around single-seller stores like Shopify sites, and Kaziukėnas said the marketplace work started at TikTok’s request. It’s unclear when the changes would go live, or whether Amazon wants them to open its catalog to agents or to let its agents buy elsewhere.
