eBay switched off the Community forum’s direct messaging on September 1 after scammers used it to send members fake account verification notices, according to Liz Morton at Value Added Resource. The messages claimed to come from an eBay Security Team and warned that eBay would restrict accounts unless users finished a mandatory verification within 24 hours, with links that appeared to lead to eBay but opened a page requesting card details. eBay told forum members it was seeing a rise in phishing DMs on community.ebay.com, some of them very hard to spot. The company had moved its Community off Khoros to a Bevy platform in June and promoted the rebuilt forum in an August 26 blog post as a trusted place for buyers and sellers. eBay hasn’t said what it’s changing or when messaging returns.
