Meta’s creator program pays Indonesian accounts that fill US and Australian political Facebook groups with AI-generated content

Meta’s creator program, which pays based on engagement, is funding Indonesian accounts that push political content into Australian and US Facebook groups, according to Ariel Bogle and Aqwam F Hanifan at the Guardian. One creator in West Java posts AI-generated images and questions about Islam in groups built around Pauline Hanson and Charlie Kirk, but says she doesn’t follow overseas politics and doesn’t know who those countries’ leaders are. She said she finds groups through Facebook’s own recommendations and through Indonesian chat groups where creators trade tips on which ones pay best. Meta didn’t answer questions, though it said it had suspended seven of the 14 Hanson groups the Guardian identified in June. Meta puts its total creator payouts for 2025 at nearly $3 billion.
