Amazon agreed to a class-action settlement that lets U.S. consumers pursue more than $200M in damages from third-party developers of social casino apps sold through its Appstore, over alleged illegal gambling transactions. Instead of paying into a fund, Amazon would accept a $201M judgment and hand the class its claims against the app developers, with members agreeing not to collect from Amazon. Plaintiffs filed the proposed settlement Thursday in Seattle, pending a judge’s approval, resolving a 2023 suit that alleged Amazon violated Washington gambling and consumer-protection laws by brokering social casino transactions. Amazon denied wrongdoing and welcomed the deal, which pegs the $201M at 30% of class members’ app spending, while parallel cases proceed against Apple, Google, and Meta.
