Anthropic and OpenAI now capture about 89% of revenue across 34 leading AI startups, up 4.5 percentage points from six months ago, according to The Information’s Generative AI Database, with the group generating nearly $80B in annualized revenue or $6.6B per month, up 112% from six months ago. Anthropic alone now accounts for about half of that $80B figure after its revenue recently surpassed OpenAI’s on the strength of AI coding tools, though both figures are somewhat inflated since Anthropic shares revenue with Amazon and Google as resellers and OpenAI must share 20% of revenue with Microsoft through 2030 (potentially $6B this year). Three startups crossed $500M in annualized sales since December joining coding app Cursor: Perplexity, ElevenLabs, and Cognition, though most remain unprofitable with Anthropic and OpenAI alone burning more than $30B annually mostly on model training, and Cursor’s gross margin sat at negative 23% as of the quarter ended in January before turning positive.
