64% of Shopify and WooCommerce product pages have a critical accessibility failure, including stores using overlays, per a study by Dave Davies

Nearly two-thirds of the 59,400 Shopify and WooCommerce product pages scanned from the world’s top million websites failed on at least one issue rated critical for accessibility, according to a report by web accessibility specialist Dave Davies. The most common problem was text with too little contrast against its background, found on 80% of pages, followed by links a screen reader can’t describe on 53% and images missing alt text on 27%. Of the 1,691 pages running an accessibility overlay widget that promises automatic fixes, 62% still had a critical failure. Davies notes both platforms have put real work into checkout accessibility, but product pages also carry code from themes, apps, agencies, and store content, and a problem in any one of them can block a shopper.
