Walmart will switch on tap-to-pay Monday at select Walmart and Sam's Club stores, with the rest of its US locations following by year-end and fuel stations by mid-2027. That ends a decade of trying to keep shoppers out of Apple's and Google's wallets, first through CurrentC, a retailer consortium built to kill Apple Pay, and then through Walmart Pay, a QR code buried in the app that leaves the transaction data with Walmart. Walmart Pay and Scan & Go both survive, but shoppers can now load Walmart, Sam's Club, and OnePay cards into Apple Wallet or Google Wallet instead. Walmart's own announcement never says Apple Pay or Google Pay, though a spokesperson confirmed both to Business Insider. The reversal landed one day after Walmart posted its weakest US comp growth in six-plus years.
