University of Tennessee Research Foundation, the nonprofit that licenses the school's intellectual property, sued Anthropic in Delaware federal court over two patents covering machine learning modeled on neuroscience, in what is thought to be the first patent case brought against the company. The Knoxville-based foundation says the patents, invented by university professors, cover work in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and neuromorphic computing that Anthropic's systems infringe, and it wants unspecified damages plus an order blocking further use. Its complaint argues Anthropic's disregard for other people's IP runs past the copyrighted material at issue elsewhere. The filing became public Tuesday, one day after a California judge approved Anthropic's $1.5B settlement with authors.
