UK’s CMA proposes requiring Google to include AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity on its Android and Chrome choice screens

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority proposed rules that would require Google to include AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity on its search choice screens for Android and Chrome, as long as they meet the regulator’s technical and security standards. CMA CEO Sarah Cardell said people increasingly use AI assistants to search but can’t pick them on Google’s screens today. Google would also have to show the screen the first time someone turns on a new Android phone or opens Chrome, then make users choose a default search provider again every year. Separately, search providers would have to credit publishers properly and link users to the original material. The CMA is taking comments until October 9 and plans to reach a final decision by year-end.
