State Department shifts StateChat to OpenAI after a presidential ban on Anthropic

The State Department shifted the underlying model for its internal StateChat tool from Claude Sonnet 4.5 to GPT-4.1 following a presidential directive. The transition to the new OpenAI software rolled the chatbot training data back to May 2024 from a previous June 2025 cutoff. The agency required employees using custom setups to transition to alternative government-approved models by March 6. Anthropic filed two federal lawsuits on Monday to challenge the government ban and its designation as a supply chain risk.
