Perplexity launches Computer for Taxes to draft, review, and optimize U.S. federal tax returns using loadable AI tax modules

by | Apr 7, 2026 | E-commerce News

Perplexity expanded its Computer product with tax-specific AI modules that can draft federal returns on official IRS forms, review professionally prepared returns for errors, and build custom tools for complex situations like rental portfolio deductions or startup equity modeling. The modules are built on Perplexity's Agent Skills protocol and incorporate current tax law, including provisions from the OBBBA budget legislation that models with a September 2025 or earlier cutoff would miss, with Perplexity claiming it caught a 67% understatement of No Tax on Overtime deductions in an attorney-prepared return during internal testing. The launch targets the gap between tax software and professional help, positioning Computer as a tool for users who want more than off-the-shelf software but may not need, or want to pay for, full professional preparation.
