OpenAI plans to unify its ChatGPT app, Codex coding platform, and browser into a single desktop superapp, with President Greg Brockman temporarily overseeing the product revamp and Chief of Applications Fidji Simo leading sales for the new offering. The move reverses last year’s strategy of launching multiple stand-alone products, which OpenAI executives said fragmented resources and slowed development, with Simo writing in an internal note that the company was “spreading our efforts across too many apps and stacks.” The superapp will focus on agentic AI capabilities that can autonomously carry out tasks like writing software and analyzing data, as OpenAI looks to consolidate its product lineup and close ground on Anthropic.
