OpenAI plans to rebuild ChatGPT into a WeChat-style superapp bundling coding, agents, and partner apps before its IPO

OpenAI is planning to overhaul ChatGPT into a “superapp,” a single interface bundling coding, task automation, image generation, AI agents, and third-party apps, in a redesign internally codenamed “Aria” expected to start rolling out in the coming weeks. The aim is to push its nearly 1 billion mostly-free ChatGPT users toward higher-margin paid products ahead of a Q4 2026 IPO, modeled loosely on Tencent’s WeChat, the everything-app that Elon Musk’s X and Meta have both chased without success. The consolidation pulls together OpenAI’s Codex coding agent, its web-browsing ChatGPT Agent, and enterprise Workspace agents, and it comes under direct pressure from Anthropic, whose Claude Code crossed $2.5B in annualized revenue and which beat OpenAI to a confidential IPO filing.
