OpenAI CEO Sam Altman walked back his complaint that it’s “quite terrible” for people to keep scarce DRAM chips in their own computers, posting on X on Tuesday that his comments were taken out of context and that he wants everyone to have as much memory as they like. Altman had argued on the Cheeky Pint podcast that memory in personal computers sits mostly idle and would do more good running in data centers. The remark drew mockery online, since AI companies buying up hardware is a big reason PCs and game consoles cost more. In his follow-up posts, Altman said he has pushed for years for the world to make more memory.
