Meta’s Oversight Board called on the company to strengthen protections for ordinary people targeted by sexualized deepfakes, arguing its current system effectively favors public figures. The Board wants Meta to add AI-generated impersonations to its Adult Sexual Exploitation policy as non-consensual by default, let users designate trusted “connected accounts” to report violations on their behalf, and make AI sexual impersonation a distinct reporting category available to all users rather than only residents of Texas and Florida. The recommendations followed a case in which Meta repeatedly declined to remove an AI-generated video impersonating a woman on Instagram despite multiple reports, ultimately only restricting it to adults. The Board overturned that decision and required removal, though Meta must respond to its recommendations but isn’t obligated to adopt them.
