Meta will install keystroke and screenshot tracking software on employee computers to train its AI models, with no opt-out option

Welp, this is ####ed up! Meta is installing a software program called the Model Capability Initiative on the computers of U.S.-based employees and contractors that will track keystrokes, mouse clicks and movements, and capture screenshots of work-related apps and websites including Gmail, GChat, and its internal AI assistant Metamate, as part of an effort to train AI agents on how humans actually use computers. When employees asked how to opt out, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth responded that there is no way to opt out on a work laptop, prompting widespread internal backlash. Meta said the data will not be used in performance reviews or visible to managers, but privacy advocates called it one of the most invasive forms of workplace surveillance, warning it could replicate structural biases and cause real harm to workers with disabilities.
