Meta's standalone AI app quietly added a “For You” feed that generated entire clickbait-style “stories” on the fly, with AI-made topics, text, and images, until the company said it would deprecate the feature after The Verge asked about it. The pieces read like padded filler with no sourcing, some traced to fabrications or a years-old comedy series, and the attached images depicted real public figures with obvious AI tells, including one showing two Queen Elizabeth IIs years after her death.
None carried a visible AI label, despite Meta's past statements about flagging AI content. Meta declined to answer most of The Verge's questions about whether the output was meant as news or fiction, calling it a limited test it has no plans to continue, though the reporter noted several colleagues had the same feature.
