Google tests “Ask YouTube” AI chatbot search that generates conversational result pages with videos and text

by | Apr 28, 2026 | E-commerce News

YouTube is testing a new AI-powered search experience called Ask YouTube that generates conversational, AI Mode-style results pages combining longform videos, Shorts, and summarized text in response to natural language queries, currently available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the U.S. who are 18 or older. When a user submits a query, YouTube generates a results page with an AI-written summary at the top followed by curated video galleries organized under thematic headers, plus suggested follow-up prompts and a text box for continuing the conversation. YouTube says it is already working on expanding the experiment to non-Premium users, though early testing revealed at least one factual error, a reminder that AI-generated search summaries still require verification.
