Google spokesperson Ned Adriance told The Verge that Polymarket bets appearing alongside legitimate news articles in Google News was unintentional, saying the site “briefly appeared in Google News in error” and is no longer surfacing in results. The links had been directing users to active betting markets tied to specific news events, including a Polymarket bet on Strait of Hormuz ship traffic appearing just below results from The Guardian and Reuters. It remains unclear how Polymarket ended up in Google News or when it started, though social media reports of the issue date back to January, and Google has an existing data partnership with both Polymarket and Kalshi for its Finance product.
