eBay bans airbags and inflators from the marketplace effective September 24, after federal scrutiny over deadly replacement parts

eBay will ban airbags, airbag inflators, and steering wheel airbag covers from the marketplace on September 24, after limiting them for years to a few hundred approved automotive recyclers, according to Liz Morton at Value Added Resource. Listings get 30 days before eBay pulls them, and parts with no inflator, such as crash sensors and diagnostic modules, stay listable by pre-approved US sellers. The ban follows a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation into replacement inflators marked DTN60DB, which have ruptured in 13 crashes, killing ten people and severely injuring three, and which the agency barred from sale in April. NHTSA served eBay a Special Order in January seeking ten years of records on substandard airbags sold through the site, and eBay said it has none.
