Block launches Managerbot, a proactive AI agent for Square sellers that manages inventory, scheduling, and marketing autonomously

by | Apr 7, 2026 | E-commerce News

Block introduced Managerbot, an AI agent embedded in Square that proactively monitors seller businesses and proposes actions on inventory forecasting, employee scheduling, and marketing campaigns without waiting for sellers to ask, marking a shift from Square's earlier reactive chatbot. Built on Anthropic's Claude Sonnet and OpenAI's GPT models, Managerbot requires seller approval before executing any changes, a design choice that reflects both a trust-building strategy and the shadow of Block's January 2025 settlement with 48 state financial regulators that resulted in an $80M fine over Cash App compliance failures. The launch comes weeks after CEO Jack Dorsey cut more than 4,000 employees, nearly half of Block's workforce, citing AI as the driving rationale, and early data shows sellers using Managerbot are consolidating more of their operations onto Square to feed the agent more data.
