Anthropic wins Commerce Department clearance to restore Mythos 5 for about 100 vetted cyber-defense partners after a two-week export-control shutdown

Anthropic received U.S. government clearance on Friday to restore access to its Mythos 5 model for roughly 100 companies and federal agencies, after a Commerce Department letter from Secretary Howard Lutnick walked back a two-week-old export-control directive that had forced a global shutdown. Lutnick wrote that appropriate safeguards were in place to let certain trusted partners use the model, while excluding Anthropic’s Fable 5 model from the clearance entirely. Many of the approved organizations had taken part in Project Glasswing, Anthropic’s invite-only cybersecurity initiative that enrolled about 200 firms before the freeze, and foreign nationals at cleared firms are now exempt from licensing requirements. The original June 12 directive barred foreign nationals from using either model over jailbreaking concerns, and because limiting access by nationality proved unworkable, Anthropic disabled both globally.
