Amazon's annual Prime Day event will run four days, June 23 through 26, for a second straight year, after the company observed members browsing and purchasing throughout the full period last year. Prime VP Jamil Ghani said groceries and household essentials will be a “real focus” of this year's promotions, with produce, hot dog buns, and meats as low as $1 and some personal care items like soap expected to be half off. The event comes against a difficult economic backdrop, as U.S. consumer sentiment dropped to a record low in May, driven by surging oil prices and the U.S.-Iran war, with lower-income consumers in particular citing high prices. Launched in 2015, Prime Day also serves as a way for Amazon to recruit new members to its $139-a-year loyalty program and promote its own products and services.
