Amazon Web Services experienced a widespread outage Monday that disrupted hundreds of services including Reddit, Snapchat, Venmo, and Perplexity. The issue, traced to a DNS problem in AWS’s US-EAST-1 region, caused “significant API errors and connectivity issues” across more than 100 Amazon services before being fully resolved by 6 p.m. ET. The downtime rippled across airlines, financial apps, and workplace tools, forcing companies like United and Robinhood to deploy backups while Amazon worked to restore operations. Small reminders that it may not be a great idea sometimes for one company to power most of the web!
