Amazon impersonation scammers stole £1,800 from Dorian Jones, a 70-year-old retired charity volunteer in Westbury, Wiltshire, pulling the money out of two bank accounts across 12 separate transactions. Jones was told his Amazon account was being used to buy two smartphones, which he then found sitting in his basket when he logged in, and the caller kept him on a crackly line for nearly two hours while correctly answering questions about his son, his wider family, and his education. Suspicion set in when he was told to enter digits on his handset to supposedly block the scammers and fake bank texts began arriving, but a second caller phoned in claiming to be a genuine Amazon employee and vouched for the first. Wiltshire Police is investigating, and Amazon has contacted Jones to help secure his account.
