Amazon ends support for Kindles from 2012 or earlier on May 20, cutting off downloads for devices up to 18 years old

Amazon will cut network connectivity for all Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier on May 20, meaning affected users will no longer be able to buy, borrow, or download new books, though titles already on the device will remain accessible. Users who still want to read on these devices should avoid deregistering or factory resetting them, as Amazon warned that doing so will prevent the device from being re-registered or used at all afterward. Amazon told CNET that fewer than 3% of its users still rely on these older models and said it will offer promotional pricing to help affected customers transition to newer devices.
