Texas AG Ken Paxton sues OpenAI and Sam Altman, seeking to block minors from ChatGPT and require outside approval of new models

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman on Friday under Texas consumer protection law, claiming ChatGPT lacks the safeguards to stop it from helping mass shooters, pushing vulnerable users toward suicide, and hooking minors, according to Eleanor Klibanoff at The Texas Tribune. Paxton wants a court order that would bar minors from using ChatGPT and make every new OpenAI model clear a court-appointed evaluator before release. Paxton is running for the US Senate with backing from Elon Musk, his largest donor, who has feuded with Altman since leaving OpenAI in 2018. OpenAI said it supports state safety standards but wants them applied across the AI industry rather than aimed at one company.
