Google’s AI Overviews attribute other companies’ complaints to small businesses, who pay for ads against their own bad press

Google’s AI Overviews are pinning other companies’ complaints on small businesses, with little for owners to do about it, according to Emily Stewart at Business Insider. The Plastics Shed, a UK building-plastics supplier, had its feedback summarized as overwhelmingly negative on the strength of reviews that seem to belong to rivals and to firms selling literal plastic sheds, all while owner Damian Mansell spent about GBP 700 a month advertising with Google. Weeks of submitted corrections eventually cleaned it up, but Google turned down his request for an ad refund. An Idaho property manager watched her firm get merged with a similarly named one that closed years back, and an SEO consultancy got branded a scam over an old Reddit thread about an unrelated app.
