Apple has removed Meta Platforms' WhatsApp and Threads from its App Store in China at the government's request, citing national security concerns.
This action, which also included the removal of Telegram and Signal, indicates a tightening grip on foreign messaging services and reduced flexibility for Apple in China.
Other Meta apps and many Western apps remain accessible including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, YouTube, and X.
The app bans are part of broader Chinese regulations requiring all apps to register with the government, with non-compliance leading to removal.
These developments align with China's longstanding approach to controlling internet access and information flow within its borders.
