Visa partners with OpenAI to let AI agents make payments for users inside ChatGPT within preset spending limits

Visa is partnering with OpenAI to let AI agents make payments on users' behalf inside ChatGPT, plugging one of the largest card networks into OpenAI's push toward agentic commerce. Visa will supply the rails behind the scenes, tokenized credentials, real-time authorization, fraud monitoring, chargebacks, and refunds, while transactions run within user-set guardrails like spending caps, approved merchant categories, and required approvals. The two also plan to explore enterprise uses, including letting OpenAI's Codex coding agent buy services like API access or compute on its own within set limits. It's a notable step toward agents handling the actual checkout rather than just discovery, though neither company gave a launch date, and OpenAI's earlier Instant Checkout effort with Etsy fizzled and got pulled back this year.
