OpenAI raised its projected compute spending to roughly $750B through 2030, up from about $600B earlier this year, according to the WSJ. OpenAI committed $20B to a data center called Project Camellia in Effingham County, Georgia, and contracted with Georgia Power for 3.2 gigawatts between 2028 and 2032. OpenAI is designing and developing that site itself instead of renting chips from Oracle or AWS as it does elsewhere, and it has hired Brent Mayo, who helped stand up xAI's Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, to run data center build and delivery. Cloud spending has become a point of tension between Sam Altman and CFO Sarah Friar ahead of the planned IPO. Friar walked back Altman's $1.4T compute figure by telling investors the number was $600B, and she has warned internally that OpenAI might not cover future contracts if revenue lags.
