OpenAI President Greg Brockman testified for two days at the ongoing Musk v. Altman trial, describing a key August 2017 meeting where Elon Musk demanded full control of the company's planned for-profit conversion. According to Brockman's testimony, when the other co-founders refused to give Musk unequivocal control, Musk said “I decline,” stood up and stormed around the table, grabbed a painting that Ilya Sutskever had commissioned for him, and asked Brockman, “When will you be departing OpenAI?” Musk stopped his regular donations to the company's operating budget and left the board the following February, citing “a path of certain failure” for OpenAI. Brockman testified that Musk “did not and does not know AI,” describing how Musk dismissed an early demonstration of the software that would become ChatGPT.
