OpenAI President Greg Brockman said at a Sequoia Capital talk that agentic coding tools have rapidly progressed, going from writing 20% of code to 80% of code over the course of December, transforming AI from “a sideshow” into “the main thing that you're doing.” Brockman said OpenAI's Codex platform has evolved from a tool primarily for software engineers into one that can support “anyone who's doing work with a computer,” though he added that the company still ensures a human is responsible for all code that is merged. The comments echo similar claims from Google CEO Sundar Pichai that 75% of new code created at Google is now AI-generated and reviewed by human engineers, up from 25% in 2024, while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has predicted AI could be writing 90% of code within three to six months and essentially all of it within 12 months.
