OpenAI falls behind Anthropic on revenue growth and valuation after betting on consumer ChatGPT instead of developer tools

by | Aug 2, 2026 | Latest E-commerce News & Updates

Anthropic's revenue growth and valuation have both passed OpenAI's, with Anthropic approaching $1 trillion and moving toward a fall IPO on the strength of Claude Code, according to Berber Jin at the Wall Street Journal. Sam Altman had staked growth on people paying for ChatGPT, while the money turned out to be in selling coding tools to engineers and their employers. OpenAI's Codex drew weak usage at launch and developers picked Claude Code, as OpenAI spent compute on the Sora video app and other flops. OpenAI has since put Greg Brockman over the product line, hired a first chief revenue officer, and may push its listing to next year.
