OpenAI hired Ironclad co-founder and former CEO Jason Boehmig to lead product for its new legal vertical, marking the company's entrance into the market for legal-specific AI tools, which OpenAI confirmed to Law.com. Boehmig, who began his career as a corporate attorney at Fenwick & West, co-founded contract-management company Ironclad in 2014 and led it as CEO until April 2025, when he became executive chairman. He said the legal industry is grappling with generative AI across firms, in-house teams, bar associations, pro bono groups, and law schools, adding that “it's a mistake to believe that any one player can do it alone, even a frontier lab.” The move follows similar pushes from Anthropic, which released a Claude legal plug-in in February and a dozen practice-area plug-ins in May, and Microsoft, which launched an AI legal agent in Word in April.
